Overview

The use of fishes in research and testing is rapidly increasing globally, and there is now widening recognition of the need to minimise harms and improve welfare. This RSPCA-led online event brings together experts from academia and industry to share cutting-edge knowledge and approaches to refining fish use, enhancing both animal welfare and translatability.

With sessions focusing on

Session 1 - Fish Welfare

Including fish behaviour, the development of the 3Rs and attitudes to laboratory fish welfare, and using analgesia in fishes

Session 2 - Practical Refinements for Fish

Incorporating refining procedures in general, ‘severe’ procedures, and refining DNA sampling

Session 3 - Welfare Assessment and Humane Endpoints

Including identifying ill health in zebrafish, humane endpoints and the 3Rs in regulatory assessments, and refining the Fish Acute Toxicity Test (OECD TG203)
